Busy Isn't the Same as Effective: Focus on What Matters Most

Leadership Tip: Make Time for What Matters Most
Whether you're a school leader or a classroom teacher, there's never enough time to accomplish everything on your to-do list. The key to being effective isn't doing more—it's focusing your time and energy on what makes the greatest difference for students and staff.
Before tackling your next task, ask yourself:
Impact: What will make the biggest difference in student learning, behavior, or school culture?
Urgency: What truly needs my attention now?
Alignment: Does this move us closer to our classroom, school, or district goals?
Ownership: Do I need to handle this myself, or can someone else appropriately own it?
Consequences: What happens if I wait—or don't do it at all?
Try the Impact–Urgency Matrix:
✅ Do First: High-impact, high-urgency priorities.
📅 Schedule: Important work that supports long-term improvement but isn't urgent today.
🤝 Delegate: Tasks that others are capable of owning.
🗑️ Eliminate: Low-impact activities that consume time without meaningfully advancing your goals.
💡 Challenge for this week: Identify one task to prioritize, one to delegate or share, and one to eliminate.
Remember: Effective leadership isn't about doing everything. It's about protecting time for the things that make the greatest difference in student success.
